MBNA Gold 400 Live Report

by Dennis DiPietro

The day was a great race day. Started with the anticipation of having three Pontiacs starting in the top 10, with Derrike being the best starting in 3rd place.

Once arriving at Dover Downs we all stopped at our favorite drivers souvenir trailers. It was nice to hear Derrike being spoken about with such a positive feeling by most attending. Once inside we found our turn 3 seats, programmed the scanner and settled in for an exciting race.

The Bahari' Racing crew were extremely upbeat on the radio reminding Derrike to be patient and to run his race. When the cars were out on their warm up laps all seemed okay. Green flag dropped and the race only went 3 laps until the days first caution for debris. During that time Derrike radioed in a tight condition and was told to find his groove until the next caution.

The Gumout Pontiac Grand Prix seemed to have a pushing condition all day between turns. Doug Hewitt and crew worked hard all day trying to adjust the ill handling car. Unfortunately, their day came to an end between turns 1 and 2 on lap 314 when the camshaft broke and sent the Gumout Pontiac to the garage for the day to finish 35th.

Still this team has wind in their sails from Derrike's outstanding qualifying effort at Dover, and will try to build on it for Martinsville next week.
