Mountain Dew 500

September 1, 1996
Darlington, SC

Mountain Dew 500
Derrike Cope and the Badcock/Pilot team had a good qualifying effort and started 11th on the track "too tough to tame".

This is where Derrike was during the race:

  • 5th position, lap 40 of 367
  • 39th, lap 83
  • 37th, lap 149
  • 37th, lap 212
  • 35th, lap 285

With oil on the track at lap 50, many of the front leaders including Derrike found the wall. He ended up going behind the wall for repairs and came out at lap 83. Derrike finished the race in 34th position 51 laps down.

At the end of the race, Derrike said, "Somebody put oil down going into turn 3 and nobody saw it. All the leaders came up through there and we just had nowhere to go. We just hit it and went right up into the wall. It's really unfortunate. We had a good race car today and had a shot to win this race, so it's really disheartening."
