Miller 500

June 2, 1996
Dover, DE

Dover Downs

Derrike Cope started the race with a qualifying effort of 17th. Through the beginning of the race, Derrike managed to stay up around 12th holding on to the lead lap. Once he got lapped by Dale Jarrett, there were a number of cars in front of him that also got lapped.

Derrike managed to move up to 8th position during the race and was the first car one lap down. On two back-to-back cautions, he took the lead on the restart hoping to get a caution which would put him back on the lead lap. Unfortunately, neither time a caution occurred. On the second caution, after he was put a lap down again by the field, there were a few laps and then a caution occurred by a Dale Jarrett accident. It's unfortunate that the caution did not happen sooner.

After Derrike lost the lead lap again, he fell to the back of the pack and lost more laps. Derrike ended up finishing in 23th position.
