1993 Winston Cup Season

Derrike & Bojangles car

About a week before the Daytona 500, Bob Whitcomb Racing folded leaving Derrike Cope without a team and ride. Fortunately for Derrike, Cale Yarborough liked Derrike so much that he released Jimmy Hensley to sign Derrike. The team had received a sponsorship from Bojangles' chicken and biscuit restaurants. In the Daytona 500, Derrike qualified 35th due to an accident in his 125-mile qualifying race. But during the race, he ran at the front, leading three times for 30 laps. With 31 laps to go, another car got loose out of Turn 2 and slammed into the Bojangles' Ford Thunderbird. Derrike was able to finish the race in 29th.

Bojangles carIn the Winston 500 at Talladega, Derrike was in eight place when the race was red-flagged near the end, and during the ensuing two-lap shootout, he was able to maintain that eighth place for the finish.

Black #93"I can still remember that first race - and that young, green, impatient individual who got into that race car. I was very excited and very apprehensive. I'm one of those people who has to be very good at what I do. I push myself. I put more pressure on myself than I need to. I get a lot more enjoyment out of racing now, than I did those first few races. I'm more relaxed and I feel capable of running up front and winning. I have a good feeling every week." - Derrike Cope

Crew chief was Bob Johnson and chief engine builder was Tony Santanicola.
