Daytona 500

February 18, 2006
Daytona, FL

Pre-Race

Derrike will be driving for McGlynn Racing in Daytona. Derrike said, "The team is busy putting the finishing touches on the Daytona car before they head to Joey Arrington’s to put the engine and drive train in the car and chassis dyno. Then it will be off to Daytona. I am looking forward to Speedweeks. I know we are really behind, but it is what it is. We will do the best that we can and put in a monumental effort. I feel very fortunate to be going down in the equipment that we have and I know everyone on the crew is fired up and ready to get started."

Saturday, February 10

Derrike updated us with the following, "Today went fairly well. We were not very fast by ourselves, but I am hoping that it will be better in the draft. We were 55th fastest in the first practice session and 56th fastest in the second session. We had a bit of a voltage problem which hindered our progress. So we really did not get a chance to make very many changes. We will just go get our laps in on Sunday and see where we will start in the 150's on Thursday. The engine seems strong, so hopefully it will perform well on Thursday and we can put ourselves in a position to make the Daytona 500. There are 61 cars here and they are all very good so we will really have to put a great effort forth to get in. I am proud of the effort by the team just to get here, and with no testing things do not look too bad. I will update you after qualifying to inform you about our day."

Sunday

Derrike qualified 57th out of 61 cars in the #74 Royal Administration Dodge. He had a time of 49.902 with speed of 180.354.

Monday - Wednesday

In the third practice, Derrike was 5th fastest with a time of 47.917 and speed of 187.825. In the fourth practice, he was 57th fastest with a time of 49.009 and speed of 183.640.

Thursday

Derrike started the Gatorade Duel Race 2 in 27th position and finished in 18th position. This was not a high enough position to make the race.

Official Report

After the race, Derrike said, "With Speedweeks ending I would say that I am certainly disappointed that we did not make the Daytona 500, but pleased with the effort that we put forth with the time we had to get ready. We struggled with the car and the new tire combination. We were tight in the Duel qualifying race and just ran out of laps before we were able to get to the cars we were racing for position. The engine ran great. I look forward to going to Talladega with the other car which I think is the better car. I do not know when our next race will be, probably Texas provided everything goes as scheduled. We will be running a limited schedule for this year."
