Derrike will be driving for McGlynn Racing
in Daytona. Derrike
let us know the following on Friday, Feb. 10th. "The team is in Daytona. The
car number is 74 and there are co-primary sponsors at Daytona, both Dover
races, both Pocono races, and Chicagoland. The sponsors are Sundance
Vacations and My Guardian 911."
Saturday
In Saturday's first practice, the #74 Dodge was 52nd fastest with a time of
49.495 and speed of 181.837. In the second practice, the car was 49th
fastest with a time of 49.434 and speed of 182.061.
Derrike gave us an update of
Saturday's events. "I was pleased with how the day went for us. We were one
of the first cars out both sessions, and made some good runs, for no testing
and not knowing what the car wants. But, I would love to be a bit faster,
although we are not far off from some good cars. The car drives well, so I
look forward to getting qualifying behind us and get to drafting practice on
Wednesday.
"Sundance Vacations and
Royal Administration will be on the car for qualifying, and a decal wrap for
the debut of My Guardian 911 and Sundance Vacations will be on the car for
the Gatorade Duel 150 mile qualifying races on Thursday.
"The crew did a great job today. I was really pleased how well they worked
together today and got a lot accomplished. I look forward to tomorrow and
the rest of the week."
Sunday
Derrike tried to qualify as the 52nd of 58 cars. Since the car hadn't been
on the track for testing, the only practice the team had was the day before.
The ca took the track in mostly a yellow color and Derrike's first lap was
49.779 with a speed of 180.80. This was 49th fastest at the time. The second
lap was 49.091 with speed of 183.333 which was 41st best at the time. At the
end of the round the #74 Dodge was in 47th position. This put Derrike in the
Gatorade Duel 1 race starting 22nd.
Wednesday
In the first practice, Derrike was 32nd fastest of 58 cars with a time of
47.596 and speed of 189.092. In the second practice he was 40th fastest with
a time of 47.819 and speed of 188.210. It was reported that in one of the
practices that the car had brushed the wall.
Thursday
Derrike started the Gatorade Duel Race 1 in 20th position and finished in
19th position. Because of the unusual Daytona 500 qualifying rules, this was
not a high enough position in order to make the Daytona 500. Derrike had a
chance at the end due to a caution which left one lap to go. The caution
moved him up to a position right behind Kevin Lepage and Mike Skinner, two
other drivers trying to race their way into the 500. But those two drivers
were able to pull away and even with a last minute move by Derrike going
low, the #74 Dodge did not have enough power to pull out a higher position.

Derrike gave us an update
on Daytona. He said, "Things did not go as planned in Daytona. I obviously
was disappointed with the outcome, but not with the productivity of the race
team and the way they conducted themselves and the way they prepared the car
before and during our time in Daytona. We were always first on the track, we
had minimal problems, and for no pre-season testing I could not have
expected much more for the outcome. We gave ourselves a chance to make the
race. We certainly were a factor, and in my opinion we represented our
sponsors well and in a class fashion.
"We ran well in the first
segment of the race working our way into the transfer spot for most of the
time if not in a position to be. We had the right front tire wear pretty
badly going to the cords which made the car not want to turn in the corners
so I would have to lift off the throttle periodically which allowed cars to
get by us. On the caution we pitted, but could not make it on fuel so had to
come back in and thus lost the draft with no fast cars behind us. We needed
someone to push this car all the time or we could not hold on. We need some
testing to find some things to help with that. But with the caution we had a
chance but fell short. I am pleased with the effort and the exposure we
acquired while in Daytona. We are obviously behind with no testing and with
all the things needed to be really ready for a long season, but we will work
hard and see if we can get back on track in California this weekend."
