Pop Secret 500 Live Report

by Bruce Bates

I was at the race and actually happened to be listening to Derrike on the scanner when he hit the wall. First just to fill everyone in on what I saw before that as well since Derrike's coverage is lacking on TV as we all know.

Derrike started last and as he rolled off pit road at the beginning, his car shut off and he was able to get it restarted once but it was soon off again. He pulled to pit road right away and then they pushed it to the opening from pit road to the garage to do repairs. It took 12 laps but they fixed the problem and Derrike got back out there.

He got the lucky dog pass a few times at the beginning with all the cautions.

Around lap 135 or so, he was in the pits when there was a fire on the side of the car. He had said on the radio he had run out of gas but I did not see any ether being sprayed. What I suspect is they were putting the gas in as Derrike is trying to restart the car. Probably flooded a bit and when it re-fired, some flames from the exhaust mixed with spilled gas to create a flare up. Unfortunately, the fire extinguishers were sprayed in and a lot of it went into the car. As Derrike was leaving he said it was tough to breathe and see through the windshield or back window. But it cleared up a bit as he continued around.

Then after a few laps, he spun and hit the turn one wall pretty hard. The spotter called to see if he was all right and after a long couple of seconds, Derrike answered he was hurt but okay. He then keyed back up to say he had cut a right rear tire and it had knocked the breath out of him when he hit and his left leg hurt "of course." The mention of the left leg being hurt made me think it was a previous injury and I suspect from the Saturday race. (On Saturday, at the start he was saying the seat was burning him. Apparently the exhaust right under the seat was too close to the bottom and the heat was right under Derrike's backside. They put some foam under him and it helped but I wonder if the damage as far as a blister/burn on his leg was already done.

Anyway, he got out of the car after the wreck and limped down the track to the ambulance. I never heard anything else and the crew did pack up everything. I suspect DC will be a bit bruised with the seatbelts and such but will probably be fine for next week.
