Sharpie 500 Live Report

by Jim Coolbeth

Just returned from Bristol last night.

While watching practice they were bad at the start, but I watched them make many adjustments and by the end of practice the car was able to hold the bottom pretty well. But when I saw him running near some other top team cars the difference was clear: HP, acceleration out of the turns.

At the race drivers intro Derrike's uniform was white and said "Racer's Edge" on the front. Maybe the 94 team is still in the works. At race start Derrike held on for a little bit, but the 98 seemed to get slower as the runs went along. They pitted and had the hood up one time and I think they were fooling with the master cylinder and they added water. I believe they had an overheating problem. After losing about 5 laps he came back out and ran really well actually passing a few cars, Petty, Craven, Spencer, etc. and was putting some heat on Todd Bodine when he started to slow again.

The second time they lifted the hood they pushed it behind the wall and were scattering around trying to fix the problem, but to no avail. When he left the race he was in 31st spot, but slipped down the order as other damaged cars returned to run laps. I feel that Derrike gave a good account of himself in both races in underpowered cars.
