2002 Winston Cup Season |
|||||||||||||||||
| Derrike Cope
planned on driving a limited schedule for the #57 CLR team in 2002. In terms of the CLR team Derrike indicated,
"Looks like we will be running at the upcoming Las Vegas, Atlanta, and
Texas races. We are considering Talladega and Charlotte and I'm hopeful that we
will be running there also. We are scheduled to test at Texas March 22nd and
25th." As it turned out, the team only drove at Las Vegas.
The team was supposed to go to Daytona but pulled from the race due to the poor results the Fords showed in Daytona testing. Derrike still went to Daytona though to drive in the Rolex 24 and to be owner of the Quest Motor Racing #37 Folgers-Jakada Craftsman Truck Ford. Derrike was affiliated with FOX Sports as racing analyst again and broadcasted live from the track when he was entered in the event. When the #37 was on the track, there were a number of car designs used. For the Pepsi 400 in Brooklyn, MI and the remaining races, Derrike drove for the BAM Racing team in the #49 Dodge. Friendly's Restaurants sponsored Derrike for the September Loudon race. Their press release can be seen here. Unfortunately, Derrike was in an accident in the previous race so Kevin Lepage drove the Friendly's car.

Next Season
November 13, 2002 -
Looking forward to the 2003
season Derrike was upbeat and shared the following, "We are finalizing things
for next year on several fronts. We have several changes on the drawing board
for the 2003 season. I hope to make a statement on sponsorship for 2003 within
the next couple of weeks. At this time we can't share further specifics but we
will as we have the latitude to do so."
Kentucky Test
Session Planned
October 10, 2002 -
Derrike will drive the #49 BAM Dodge at a test session scheduled for next week in Kentucky. Earlier today Derrike told us, “I am getting around well and have been ambulating without the aid of a cane. I am going regularly for therapy and notice improvement every day. I am still somewhat sore however,
but that is diminishing. If my physician gives me the OK, I plan on driving for the BAM team at the Atlanta race.”
Derrike is holding off making a decision on future Busch starts while he continues to monitor his improvement. We will keep you updated on future developments as they occur.
Derrike's
Recovery on Track
October 1, 2002 -
Derrike continues to improve from his recent injuries. He is receiving regular outpatient physical therapy and is using a crutch to assist him in walking. Derrike wishes to express his appreciation to his fans for the many acts of kindness extended to him.
Derrike's
Update
August
25, 2002 - Derrike
updated us with the following: ""I am sorry that I have not been able to get the latest info to all of you when I should have. Things are so hectic you can not believe it.
"As for Michigan things went fairly well. Obviously the late race incident with
the wall hurt, but it did showcase the team and myself well. Things are
happening or materializing very late with respect of whether I am going to the
race or not each week, and by the time I know it, I have minimal time to get
ready. We will try to make some arrangements so we can get information to you faster.
"As for Bristol, things went really well in practice. I believe we were like 16th or 17th in practice but got very loose qualifying. I do not know if it was the rain or if it was just a loose set of tires that got us that way or what. But we will take 29th! As for Happy Hour we were not that good. We were very tight, so Scott, the crew chief, made wholesale changes for Saturday and did an outstanding job along with all the rest of the BAM crew. These guys and girls on the team work really hard and have really been a pleasure to work with. In the race we had a little pit stop problem that got us 2 laps down, we made one up, and then ran really well holding our own, until just after a restart I went into turn one and got really loose going in the corner. I did not know if I got some help or not, but went up the race track and got a lot of trash on the tires and when I came around the next time I went into turn one and the right front tire went down and I went into the wall ending our night.
"There is a lot of potential with the team and they are great people to work with. Beth Ann and Tony Morgenthau are wonderful people and I have really enjoyed getting to know them, and hope to continue to have more
opportunities with them and their organization. General Manager Eddie Jones has been instrumental in keeping things going in the right direction. I would be remiss if I did not say that none of this could have happened without Frank and Marsha Ray and MNR Productions, and the time they have put towards this project.
"Right now it looks like I will be driving a Busch Grand National car for
Jay Robinson and the #49 car for the remainder of the year, which is a joint
effort with Dan Shaver and Petro Express Convenience stores. Ernie Cope and some
of my guys will help with that as we prepare for some up and coming events with
the #37 Cup car which I will announce shortly.
" As a side note my wife Renee was in Virginia at a horse show and was Equitation Champion and reserve Champion for the event with her horse Chester. I am so happy for her and proud of her accomplishment this past weekend. A special thanks to Mike and Liz Hay of Pilot Knob Quarter Horses for finding this horse for my wife.
Pennsylvania
500 Update
July 18, 2002 - Derrike and the Quest Motor Racing team are busily preparing for
the July 28 running of the Pennsylvania 500 at Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The #37
Ford will be sponsored for the Pocono race by M and R Productions and will
feature a Poison paint scheme.
Derrike and the team are very pleased with their testing at Indy earlier this week. "We ran our new car at Indy for the two day test session. We struggled somewhat on our first day. After going through our process to improve handling and achieve greater speed we made great strides during our second day test. Actually, I anticipate that we can run in the 49s on sticker tires at Indy," Derrike commented. "I am grateful to M and R Productions and Friendly's for sponsoring our Indy test session. It enabled us to prove that we are capable of achieving substantial improvement in our program and to be more competitive each race. That is quite an achievement considering our funding limitations," Derrike added.
Derrike shared the following regarding future race plans, "We are on the sponsorship hunt for the upcoming Indy race. Our showing in the testing session demonstrates that our new cars handled well and with our improved Tri Star engines we are competitive." Tentative plans are for the team to run at Michigan August 18.
#37 Indy Test
July 16, 2002
- Derrike tested in Indianapolis Monday and Tuesday. Bart Kelley of Creative
Motorsports was in Indy and provided some photos of the car and Derrike at
the test. He also had the chance to speak with Derrike briefly and Derrike said
the test was going great. He ran 27 laps and was 30th fastest of 54 drivers with
a speed of 174.778. Picture Gallery 65
In day 2, Derrike ran 68 laps and was 13th(!) fastest of 54 drivers with a speed
of 179.675. Bart provided more photos from day 2 testing. Picture

#37
Poison Ford
July
3, 2002 - Derrike informed us, "Renee and I attended a Poison concert in
Pennsylvania Saturday night. We had a great time. All the band members are really great
guys and are really excited about the car for the Pocono race. The car looks great! We are also preparing a showcar to go
out to the Poison concerts where fans can get their picture taken with the car as well. It looks like all the guys Bret,
C.C., Rikki, and Bobby are going to be at Pocono for the race as they have a week break in their tour.
"We have built a new car for Indy, it looks great! We are hoping to test on
the 15th & 16th of July. I do not have much more to report at this time. I will
update you soon on the Brickyard and a few other possibilities.
Indy Testing
Scheduled
June 21, 2002 - Derrike and the Quest Motor Racing #37 team have scheduled a test session
for July 15-16, 2002 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "We anticipate
having a productive test session at Indy. The data and information from that
test will be applicable for us in preparing for Pocono as well as the setups for
both tracks are similar. We are looking forward to good runs in both the Pocono
500 and the Brickyard 400. I have always gotten around Pocono well,"
Derrike commented.
As the team was not able to schedule a test at Chicago they do not plan on entering the Tropicana 400. Tentative plans are for Derrike to run in the Pepsi 400 at Michigan on August 18, 2002.
Sirius
Satellite Radio 400
June 17, 2002 -
Derrike provided us this
post-race update:
"It was not the
outcome I was hoping for but we learned a lot as a whole. We know where a lot of
mistakes were made and the direction we need to go in to get better. We had a
problem with the engine in Happy Hour which prevented us from getting the
necessary practice, thus we really had to guess on the race set-up. When we
tested there we concentrated only on qualifying, which was a mistake. The next
time we test we will need to do some long runs to be better prepared. As for the
race the car was very tight and we were unable to get the car freed up enough to
become competitive. But, it was the first effort and we will have to put this
behind us and move forward.
"I was really pleased to have all the support from the companies on the car... the Band Alabama, their record label RCA Nashville, Country Cares for St. Jude's Kids, and Sunoco A-1 Plus Convenience stores.
"But, Duane Wood with Who's Next Racing, Inc. has made it all possible with the funding necessary for Michigan ... so a special thanks to him.
"As for the future it
is our intent to go to Chicago, Pocono, and Indy at this time. I have to say
that it felt great to be back in the car...even though we lost the power
steering a few laps into the race so it was a work out. I will keep you all
updated on some upcoming things and test sessions...hope you enjoyed it as much
as we did."
Derrike's
Update
June 8, 2002 -
Derrike has provided this update for us. "We just got back from a test in Michigan where
things finally have gone pretty well. We had a great test and feel like we have made some headway.
So we are going to Michigan next. and it looks like possibly Chicago, the second Pocono race, and Indy as far I know right this
moment. There are a few things looking up for us I hope as far as getting to
go racing more. The speeds at Michigan were good so I am very excited about going there next
weekend. As soon as I have confirmation on the sponsor for Michigan I will let you know.
"Hope to have more to talk about soon.
Just want to thank everyone for hanging in there. Things are going to get
better."
Sirius
Satellite Radio 400
May 27, 2002 -
Derrike and the team leave after the MBNA
Platinum 400 this Sunday for a two day testing session at Michigan to prepare
for the Sirius Satellite Radio 400 on June 16, 2002. "I am pleased to be
running at Dover this weekend and at Michigan later in the month. Several things
are falling into place on the sponsorship front and I anticipate that we will be
making some announcements soon. Right now we are focusing on being productive at
Dover," Derrike commented.
Derrike

May 11, 2002 -
Derrike will be driving the Quest Motor Racing #37 Ford at the upcoming Winston
Open and the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He is pleased to
announce his affiliation with Sound Moves as the team sponsor for both the
Winston Open and the Coca-Cola 600. Sound Moves is a world leader in cargo
logistic services for live entertainment and allied industries. Sound Moves
specializes in global freight orchestration worldwide utilizing their network of
offices including locations in: New York, Los Angles, Miami, London, Mexico
City, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Singapore, and Sydney. "We are excited for the
upcoming races and are proud to be affiliated with a company with a world wide
presence," Derrike proudly commented.
Quest
to Field Two Cars at Charlotte
May 11, 2002 -
Quest Motor Racing (QMR), owned by NASCAR Winston Cup driver, Derrike Cope, will
field two (2) Winston Cup cars for the upcoming Charlotte races. GEICO Direct
agreed to a two-race deal with QMR that will include The Winston Open on
Saturday, May 18, 2002 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, May 26, 2002. Late
Thursday, Quest Motor Racing agreed to a deal with Kevin Lepage for Lepage to
drive the #38 GEICO Direct Ford in both The Winston Open and the Coca-Cola 600.
Cope's #37 Ford will be sponsored by Sound Moves, a global freight orchestration
company. Details regarding Cope's sponsorship deal with Sound Moves are
forthcoming and will be available shortly. Player Management International
coordinated both the GEICO Direct sponsorship deal and the QMR/Lepage agreement.
Derrike was excited at the news that GEICO Direct was coming on board. "We are very pleased to have GEICO Direct on board as a sponsor with us in Charlotte. They were on our car last year in Indianapolis and we are excited to have them back," Cope said on Friday. "Just last week we were trying to get a sponsorship deal put together for one car for one race and this week have sponsorship deals for two cars for two races! It is a problem you like to have." He added, "It made things a lot easier for us when Kevin Lepage agreed to come on board and drive the #38 GEICO Direct Ford because he is a proven driver with a proven track record at Charlotte and with us working together it will definitely benefit both cars. The most important thing is for both of us to make the Coca-Cola 600 and The Winston Open will give us a chance to test our cars and get a feel for the track and what to expect the following week."
Reached on Friday, Kevin Lepage was grateful for the opportunity. "I would like to thank Derrike and GEICO Direct for giving me the opportunity to run in two of the most internationally recognized premier celebrations of motorsports." He added, "I'm very excited about getting back behind the wheel of a NASCAR Winston Cup racecar. Charlotte is one of my favorite tracks. I qualified 5th there last year and finished 13th in the fall race. I am looking forward to the alliance with Derrike and with the two of us working together I am looking forward to two great finishes in the #38 GEICO Direct Ford." Lepage has 4 Top 15 finishes in six Winston Cup starts at Charlotte.
GEICO Direct provides nationwide service and ranks as the fifth largest private passenger auto insurance company in the United States. Their corporate headquarters is located in Washington, D.C. and since the beginning, the GEICO name has been synonymous with outstanding service. Instead of using agents, they have marketed directly to customers. At first those customers were exclusively government employees. In 1958, the company began serving other customers as well. In 1980, GEICO became the first insurer to provide 24-hour customer service. Each week, over 10,000 drivers switch to GEICO Direct. As of December 2001, they insured more than 4.7 million policyholders and 7.3 million autos. They go to GEICO Direct for the savings, but they stay for the service.
Updates From Derrike
April 24, 2002 -
Derrike will not be driving the 94 car in Saturday's Auto Club 300. Commenting

sponsorship for some additional races during the season." Derrike will be doing two shows
for FOX Sports this weekend.

We have the equipment at Quest to go racing. I have been talking with potential sponsors for the Charlotte races and am optimistic that we will have sponsorship in place for these events. Our goal is to use Charlotte as a springboard for additional races during the year."
