| Derrike Cope
started the year driving with new team Fenley-Moore Motorsports in the #15 Ford. The team
was based out of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The announcement
was made in September 1999 that Derrike would be driving for the team.
Soon after the announcement we interviewed
Derrike about his new ride.
Derrike drove for the team in two late races in 1999 at Charlotte and Atlanta. It was announced during the off-season that Damon Lusk would be driving for Fenley-Moore Motorsports in the ARCA series in 2000. Derrike participated in Ford testing in January. Everything-Commerce.com sponsored the team for the Las Vegas and Atlanta races. There was an additional article about the company. The company did not sponsor the next races. Because of sponsor troubles, Fenley-Moore Motorsports decided not to attend races. The opportunity came up for Derrike to leave the team and he opted to do so. “I had an opportunity to leave and felt like that was in my best interest to do so,” Derrike said. Later Derrike had this comment for his fans on April 24th, "I know that you have heard many rumors, etc., regarding my current circumstances. I wanted to personally update you and to thank you for your support. I would have liked to have done that earlier. However, circumstances did not permit that. "When I joined Fenley-Moore Motorsports it was my understanding that the team had sufficient funding to run a full schedule for up to two years, even if sponsorship was not secured. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. As a result, after Daytona I saw things deteriorate when sponsorship was not secured. It has been a discouraging time for me not to be able to compete each week and to have the opportunity to showcase my abilities as a driver. When the opportunity was available, I chose to leave Fenley-Moore and to explore and pursue other opportunities. In doing so, I have a great deal of respect for Joey Knuckles and the team. They have done an outstanding job considering the circumstances. "Currently, I am pursuing several options that should provide me with the opportunity for a full time ride. They look promising at this point. As the details are worked out, I look forward to sharing additional information with you. I look forward to seeing you July 15th (at the fan club meeting)." Derrike did not obtain a full-time ride and decided to start his own team Quest Motor Racing. |
