My wife Kim and I attended our first
NASCAR race ever at the 1994 Daytona 500. We were pretty new at the NASCAR thing, so we
didn't know exactly what to expect. Well it was a blast and got us hooked on NASCAR.
We went to the Ford party at Church Street Station in Orlando a few days prior to the race, and decided to get in line for the autograph session with Derrike, Buddy Baker, Brett Bodine, and Hut Strickland. Derrike was a very nice guy, and chatted with my wife for several minutes, and has been her favorite driver ever since. We had the chance to see Derrike in Charlotte when we had garage passes, and again he was very nice to us, and took the time to stop for a picture and autograph, really a class guy.
Not qualifying this past weekend in Michigan was really a bummer, but knowing what I do about Derrike he will not let it get him too down, but will bounce back with a good run. He may not have the huge bucks and multi-car teammates like some of the others, but he does have determination and talent, and I wish him the best of luck the rest of the season. members out there.
