My story begins with a friend pushing me to watch
Winston Cup NASCAR racing. And I was the typical person who thought that all they did was
drive around in circles. I was coaxed to go to one NASCAR race in Daytona. By the way, we
ended up in the pits and I had no idea what that meant at the time. Then, I was pushed
into picking a driver to follow. I had heard of the more famous drivers before, the
Pettys, Earnhardt, Wallace, and so on. But I have always been one to root for underdogs so
I did not want to jump on everyone else's bandwagon. So who should I pick? I was handed a
book with all the information on the Winston Cup drivers, started reading it and noticed
that Derrike Cope drove for Bobby Allison. I remembered that my father always had followed
the Allison's when he would watch . So that's how I decided on Derrike Cope. I was then
told...Are you sure you want to pick him? I asked why? I was then told that Derrike had
only won two races in his Winston Cup career. Then I said that's it then! That is who I
want to root for. I want to root for an underdog. So that's how I picked my driver. Sounds
silly I know but I have never regreted it one bit!!Now, since the very first race I have been totally
addicted to NASCAR and Derrike Cope's career. I also consider myself to be Derrike's
number one fan of all time like some others have said also. I have collected everything I
can possibly get my hands on that has anything to do with Derrike. I have t-shirts, which
I proudly wear every Sunday, collectors cards, hats, postcards, die cast cars, anything
and everything.
So, the following year I had heard
that Derrike was going to be appearing at an autograph session in Daytona. I went and got
to meet him live and in person! I was so nervous!! But he was very nice and signed 4
autographs for me. I also had my picture taken with him which I finally got signed by him
in Charlotte the following year after that! Which of course is my most prized possesion!
So, here it is....my favorite photo!

Now, even though I have only been
watching Winston Cup for a few years, I am the most faithful fan and will stick with
Derrike wherever his career takes him. I think he has so much potential and talent and I
just know that victory will come to him soon! Go get em Derrike! I'm pulling for you all
the way!! |
