| How did I become a fan of Derrike
Cope? As a child, I always followed Bobby Allison. After Bobby left the asphalt, I
followed his son Davey until his untimely death in 1993. I started to follow Bobby
Allison's race team soon after and that is when I started to take notice of Allison's new
driver, Derrike Cope, in 1994. I liked his racing style and became a big fan. And after
pulling for a driver that almost everyone else was pulling for also, it was a nice change
of pace to root for someone not as popular. Derrike's tenure with Allison was a
rollercoaster ride of joy and disappointment and I stuck with it through it all. I was
happy when he joined MB2 Motorsports and learned that Hendricks would be providing the
motors, not to mention I love SKITTLES® candies! I finally got to meet my favorite driver this year before the Pepsi 400. I
was taken with how genuine DC was and then he said "Thank you for coming out." I felt like I
should have said that to him! Plus he said my 3 1/2 year old was a "beautiful little
girl" and anyone who says something nice about my child gets an extra gold star.
I still get a lot of good-natured ribbing in the
stands when others see who my allegiance is with. But it doesn't bother me a bit. I think
Derrike Cope fans are the best there are and I'm greatful to this fan club for getting us
all together. Go Derrike! #36 is the best (and it's only a matter of time before everyone
knows it!).
