Derrike drove the #89 Northstar/Penn's Best Chevrolet for the Charlotte race. In first round qualifying on Thursday, Derrike took the track 41st of 63 cars and produced a time of 31.174 and speed of 173.221. This was good enough at the time for 20th position. Unfortunately at the end of the race, the car was left in 37th position.

In Thursday's second practice, Derrike was 57th fastest with a time of 31.187 and speed of 173.149. In Friday's first practice, Derrike was 60th fastest with a time of 31.690 and speed of 170.400.

In second round qualifying, Derrike produced a time of 31.459 and speed of 171.652. This was only good enough for 53rd position which left the #89 Chevrolet one of 20 cars going home and missing the race.
