In first round qualifying, Derrike
qualified 34th among the 65 cars that were there.
A basketball game that provided ESPN2 with 45
minutes of potential advertising in the last 10 minutes of playing time kept us from
seeing the start of the Busch series race. Fortunately, MRN is available on the Internet.
The #61 IWX Motor Freight Pontiac started 34th, in a competitive field that qualified the
pole only 0.7 seconds faster than 36th.
After only 2 green flag laps, oil on the track caused the 1st yellow flag. DC takes the
restart still in 34th.
Lap 12, more fluid on the track is reported by
MRN while ESPN2 is in commercial. As the field slows, a couple of cars get together in
front of DC, but he avoids trouble. DC takes the green flag on lap 17 in 33rd.
Lap 28, a spin brings out another yellow. MRN reports that several teams pit, including
the IWX team. (Guess what ESPN2 is doing!) DC is in 36th when the green flag falls, the
car is full of gas and has better tires than most of the field.
The race goes green the rest of the way.
