| Kraft Foods is moving from team
owner Robbie Reiser's full-time Busch Series team to a limited-schedule effort
Martin-Weiss Motorsports will field next season for Winston Cup verteran Derrike Cope, it
was confirmed Aug. 30 at Darlington. Two-time
Busch Series champion Larry Pearson drove for Martin from 1993 until late last season. Mac
Martin has since made sporadic appearances with Cope's fellow Winston Cup driver, Sterling
Marlin. Long-time crew cheif and car owner Tim Weiss bought into Martin's operation at the
end of 1996.
"It was nice taking a year off," Martin
said. "I think I can be a better car owner from my past experience. With Tim coming
on board now and us being co-owners, personally, I'll see some definite differences in
coming back."
Cope ran 12 Busch Series races last year in cars
he and Leon Fox owned. He has one Busch Series win to his credit, at New Hampshire
International Speedway in May 1994. Cope said he and Fox are hoping to field a full-time
Craftsman Truck Series team for Cope's cousin, Ernie.
"I want to showcase my potential, as well as
the team's," Cope said. "I'm looking forward to a great season ... I am excited
about being affiliated with Kraft Foods. It has been a long time since I've raced in the
Busch Series, but I think it is a great opportunity."
Three other Kraft-owned companies will share
associate sponsorship space on the team's Chevrolets, including Bull's Eye Barbeque Sauce,
Taco Bell Home Originals, and Jell-O Desserts.
