Mac Martin became a team owner with Martin Motorsports in
1984. He spent a few years in the Winston Racing Series until 1988 when he felt it was
time to move on to NASCAR's Busch Series. Martin ran a limited Busch schedule with drivers
Dick Trickle and Jimmy Maines from 1988 to 1991. In 1992 and 1993, drivers Hut Stricklin
and Larry Pearson combined to place in the top ten eleven times, with four second place
finishes, in only 27 starts. Martin continued to see improvement in 1994 as Larry Pearson
ended the season eighth in Busch Series standings.
"I can't tell you how badly I
wanted to win," stated Martin, who in 1995 with driver Larry Pearson, experienced his
first win at Darlington on March 25. Martin recorded another victory at Myrtle Beach on
June 10 and a pole position at Darlington on September 2. "Our wins and pole in 1995
made it all worth while," Martin added. "It took a lot of pressure off everyone
and re-established our confidence."
In 1996, Martin joined forces with
Tim Weiss to form Martin-Weiss Motorsports. In October of that same year, driver Sterling
Marlin placed third in the Busch Grand National race in Charlotte. Mac Martin and Tim
Weiss have been working with up and coming ASA star Joe Nott in 1997. With Martin's track
record, Nott is sure to become an outstanding driver.
Outside of racing, Martin and his
brother, David, run a rather successful business in their hometown of Lenoir, NC called
Custom Veneers, Inc. They supply veneer faces to manufacturers of furniture and plywood.
Mac Martin lives at home with his wife Peggy and their son Jason is a freshman at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro. |
