Derrike Cope's
father suffered a heart attack Tuesday night and Derrike flew to his home state of
Washington to be with him. Fortunately, Derrike's dad, Don, is doing well and was probably
watching the Busch race on television.
Since Derrike was away, Tim Bender,
who started the 1996 season as a regular on the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series before
his team ceased operations, substituted for Derrike Cope in the #26 Badcock Home
Furnishings Ford. Tim Bender qualified the Ford in 15th position.
Because there was a driver change at
the start of the race, Derrike had to start from the rear of the field in 42nd position.
In the beginning laps, the car seemed to be doing well since Derrike reached 25th position
in 12 laps. Unfortunately at that point, Derrike had to bring the car into the pits, pop
the hood, and then eventually bring the car behind the wall. It looked like the engine
problems of Winston Cup followed Derrike into the Busch Series. Derrike finished the race
in 42nd. |
