2005 Busch Season Updates

These are various updates throughout the season on Derrike Cope's racing.

Kansas - United Way 300
October 4, 2005 - Derrike gave us this update. "I am getting ready to head to the Kansas Speedway for this weekend's Busch Series race. I will be driving the number 71 Chevrolet for Randy MacDonald and MacDonald Motorsports. I will be a teammate to Kevin Lepage who has been driving their primary car for most of the season. I have known the MacDonalds for along time and look forward to driving for them. They are wonderful people and work very hard at their business. I look forward to the opportunity and will do my best to get the car in the show. We obviously are not a lock in car and will have stiff competition to get in the race. I am confident of having a good weekend for them. I will provide an update after practice on Friday. Wish us luck!"

Derrike's Update
August 15, 2005 - Derrike gave us an update for the upcoming weeks. He said, "This weeks update is to let you know that I will not be driving the number 28 Jay Robinson Racing Ford this weekend in Michigan. The team has sponsorship from Jaime Mosley for Michigan. I will be back in the car for the Bristol race in two weeks. That is all I have for the time being. I will continue to keep you updated as the season continues."

Derrike's Update
August 9, 2005 - Derrike gave us an update for the upcoming weeks. He said, "It looks like we will not take the #28 to Watkins Glen. Michigan should be the next time I will drive the car. I am working to get a few more Cup races lined up at the present time."

Derrike's Update
August 2, 2005 - Derrike gave us an update for the upcoming weeks. He said, "As of right now I will not be in the number 28 car this weekend at IRP (Indianapolis Raceway Park). Shane Hall will drive it. It looks like we will not take the #28 to Watkins Glen. Michigan should be the next time I will drive the car. I am working to get a few more Cup races lined up at the present time."

Milwaukee Update
June 26, 2005 - Derrike gave us this update about Milwaukee. "Well, it was a long day and night! As you saw we qualified 43rd. We has a great deal of problems with the race car just prior to the first practice session, which cost me the whole session. We still were late for the last session as well so we just never had a real shot at getting the car tuned in.

"Once the race started we were pretty tight and had to come in several times to try and free up the car. The crew from the #91 team were kind enough to pit our car and did a great job all night. We worked hard and finished 33rd. As for next week, as of now we will attempt to qualify at Daytona. We have been unable to qualify well at Daytona in the past, but we will have to pick up the pace to make the race, but we will do the best that we can."

Sponsorship Announced
June 23, 2005 - Beginning with Saturday's race, Derrike will be sponsored by Trans Global Waste Services. In announcing the sponsorship, Derrike commented, "We are really excited to have a company that is considered the best quality in its field join Jay Robinson Racing. We have a solid race team here with this #28 car and feel we can produce positive results both on and off the track for Trans Global Waste Services."

Funai 250 Update
May 16, 2005 - Derrike finished in the 29th position in their run at Richmond. He assessed their performance this way, "All in all it was a decent night for
us. The car was a little tight to start, but the team made the right adjustments to free us up. It was our third race with that motor. Although it was a little weak it held together for the entire race. We continue to pursue sponsorship for the #28 team. Until we can secure additional funding we will focus on continuing to race smart and take what the situation will give us. We were pleased that our run at Richmond resulted in a gain in points for the team."

Darlington Update
May 9, 2005 - Looking back on Friday's run at Darlington, Derrike summed it up this way, "We did the best we could with what we had. Overall, the car drove pretty well, but we just lacked power. We had one really bad set of tires and as a result had to pit early under green which cost us some laps. We will be taking the same car to Richmond for Friday night's race. Our goal is to get a decent finish and put some points on the board."

Phoenix Update
April 25, 2005 - Derrike finished 29th in Saturday's race and gave the following rundown. "There were inspection problems with the #28 Ford and as a result we had limited practice and did not make a qualifying attempt. In the race the car was extremely tight. We continued to work on it throughout the race, but just couldn't get it dialed in. I won't be driving this Saturday at Talladega. Jimmy Kitchens has some sponsorship money for that race so I will be sitting it out."

O'Reilly 300 Update
April 18, 2005 - As a result of their 21st place finish in Saturday's race Derrike advanced two positions in the driver point standings. Derrike provided an overview of Saturday's run. "Coming off of Bristol where we were first out of the field with a broken motor, we really turned things around at Texas. We were pleased to have a productive run for RadioShack. All in all it was a good day for the #28 team. We were a little loose in qualifying and that hurt our time. In the race, Terry and the guys did a good job. The car was well prepared and exhibited positive handling characteristics. We leased a Carl Wagner engine and it really ran well. It clearly was the best power plant that we have had under the hood this year. We were able to pass a lot of good cars on the track and demonstrated that we have the capability of being competitive. We did have a small problem in the pits under green. Absent that, we were probably a top twenty car."

Nashville Update
March 29, 2005 - Earlier today we talked with Derrike regarding Saturday's race and the upcoming race this weekend at the Bristol Speedway. He gave the following assessment. "Nashville obviously was a struggle for us. We continue to have engine issues and need to pick up on our power plant performance. When we secure sponsorship I believe that we can greatly improve our engine program. Funding is always the key to enhanced performance. Terry and the guys did a great job on the handling characteristics of the car. Even with our engine issues, our performance enabled us to move up a spot in owner points."

Sharpie Professional 250
March 29, 2005 - Regarding the upcoming Bristol race, Derrike said, "Bristol has been a good track for Jay and for me. We will once again be running with limited funding for the #28. However, we will use the best power plant that we can acquire. I continue to travel to meet with potential sponsors to provide funds that we can use to move our total program forward." Available is the press release in addition to an MP3 with Derrike speaking more about Bristol.

Sam's Town 300
March 14, 2005 - Looking back on Saturday's race, Derrike provided the following assessment. "We tried a different engine supplier for Saturday's Las Vegas race. Unfortunately, that engine didn't produce the power that we had hoped for. We need to continue to pursue getting more horses under the hood in order to be competitive. Our team did a good job with the handling during the race and as a result the car handled better as the race progressed. We will continue to focus on getting more horsepower, That, of course, is related to securing sponsorship. We are actively pursuing sponsorship for the #28 and have some good things in the works. If they materialize we will have the funding to improve our program. Right now, we will put last week behind us and prepare for Atlanta. One thing is for sure, we will keep battling."

California Update
February 27, 2005 - Derrike updated us with the efforts from California. He said, "The California weekend is over and we accomplished what we needed to. We still do not have full time sponsorship for the 28 car but hope to have a partial schedule deal soon. The effort at California this weekend was a good one with the engine we had to use. We were down on power significantly, but finished the race (34) with no problems and helped in the points effort. We hope to have a new D-3 Ford engine ready by Las Vegas. Hopefully we can be more competitive there and beyond.

"As for Mexico City, I will be sitting it out and Johnny Sauter will drive a car with the number 28 on it."

Hershey's TAKE 5 300 and Sponsorship
February 18, 2005 - Derrike and Jay Robinson are pleased to be sponsored for tomorrow's Busch race at Daytona by Radio Shack. Regarding this sponsorship, Derrike said, "We couldn't be more pleased to have a high visibility sponsor like Radio Shack for tomorrow's race. We have the decals on the car and it looks great. While this is a one race deal at this time, we hope to have a good run and parlay our sponsorship by Radio Shack into sponsorship for future races.

"We had only six laps of practice to prepare for Busch qualifying today. Nevertheless, we're optimistic. Our #28 will be the only car in the field with the new Ford D-3 cylinder head engine. We are excited and feel that this engine has great prospects. Our thanks goes to Lloyd McCleary at T and L for his hard work in developing this power plant."

Derrike Discusses 2005
January 27, 2005 - Looking ahead to the 2005 season after successful test sessions at Daytona, Derrike shared the following perspective. "We are busily preparing both the Busch and Cup cars for Daytona. We are making adjustments, and double checking everything in preparation for Daytona. We will be pulling our test engines and putting in our race engines for Daytona. We are still looking for sponsorship and are hopeful that things may be coming together there. Larry Hollenbeck will be driving our Busch entry. In Busch, I will be driving again this year for Jay Robinson Racing. I will be behind the wheel of Jay's #28 Busch entry and am looking forward to a competitive year with Jay."

Daytona Testing
January 13, 2005 - Derrike and the Cup and Busch Teams are working feverishly to prepare for the three day Cup and Busch Daytona test sessions next week. Derrike will be testing for Jay Robinson in Busch and will be testing for the SWAT Racing Cup entry. On the Cup side Derrike reports that they are working hard on finalizing sponsorship for Daytona. Several fans have asked if Derrike will be driving for Jay Robinson in 2005. Derrike verified that he will be driving one of Jay’s Busch cars during the upcoming year. We will be in contact with Derrike next week and plan on updating the website with his comments regarding Daytona testing.

Getting Ready for Daytona
January 7, 2005 - Derrike told us today that "Quest Motor Racing is working together with S.W.A.T. Racing to take a Nextel Cup car and a Busch Series car to the Daytona tests in the coming weeks. We are currently searching for sponsorship for these events but are planning to field a pair of Chevrolets at Daytona. I am really excited about the Cup car we have and look forward to getting started. Hopefully we can provide more information to you with regard to the number we will be running and sponsorship shortly."
